Whole Foods prototype puts Kinect on shopping cart

Her comes the “shopping cart of the future”. Whole Foods is planning to test a new concept, using Microsoft’s Kinect sensor for Windows. The motorized cart identifies a shopper with a loyalty card, follows the shopper around the store, scans items as they’re placed inside, marks them off the shopping list, and even checks the shopper out in the end.

Scientists print cheaper RFID tags on paper

According to Kurzweil, a tech­nique for print­ing radio fre­quen­cy iden­ti­fi­ca­tion (RFID) chips on paper has been devel­oped by Uni­ver­si­ty of Mont­pel­li­er sci­en­tists (France). The technique uses a thermal evaporation process to deposit thin aluminium coil antennas on sheets of paper, which can later be used for packaging or printed material. The researchers claim this is a cheaper way to produce RFID tags, allowing the technology to replace both barcodes and QR codes. General Electric Co. is providing employees the option of choosing between Apple’s Mac notebooks or Mac desktops instead of a Windows PC. The company now has about 1,000 Mac users and anticipates their ranks to heighten further as more employees become aware of the year-old pilot program.
